Custom foot orthotics are specialized shoe inserts designed to correct specific biomechanical issues. They work by reducing mechanical stress on the joints and soft tissues of the lower body-including the feet, legs, pelvis, and lower back-which helps to relieve pain and prevent further disability. Unlike over-the-counter inserts, custom orthotics are tailored to match the unique shape and function of an individual's foot.

What to expect

Orthotics are made using a plaster cast of each foot, which is modified based on a detailed physical examination and biomechanical assessment.

During an evaluation, your physical therapist will examine factors such as muscle strength, joint mobility, gait mechanics, and overall alignment. If orthotics are recommended, a plaster mold will be taken of your foot. A lab will then use this mold to manufacture the orthotic, applying specific corrections to the rearfoot and forefoot as needed to meet your individual needs.
